The Five Questions Brands Ask Before Running Gen AI Work

August 12, 2026

Anyone can generate a photo using AI. Getting one through campaign review is another matter — and the reasons have very little to do with the generative AI platform that produced them.

The general population would evaluate an image produced using Generative AI, and ask: does it look good? A brand marketing team trained to use AI for suitable commercial-grade photography, asks five key questions:

A Brand Review Asks Five Questions, and None of Them Are About the Platform

Here they are:

  • Does this feel like us?
  • Does the lighting quality match what we use everywhere else?
  • Is the talent model's gaze doing what this campaign needs it to do — inviting or aspirational, intimate or authoritative?
  • Does the composition serve the product or compete with it?
  • Will it hold up at the size and format this channel requires?

Notice these aren't prompting questions. They're creative direction questions from the client, and answering them takes an internalised understanding of the brand's visual standards — the same understanding a creative director carries into a shoot briefing.

Most generated AI outputs miss the brand standard — not because the platform rendered them badly, but because nobody brought that understanding into the workflow. The shot was generated toward a description instead of directed toward a creative brief, which is how something ends up technically impressive, while commercially useless at the same time.

Why Writing a Generative Prompt Isn't Writing a Brief

Nobody books a commercial shoot, based solely on a description of the shoot. The crew arrives with intent to deliver against a creative brief, and the components that deliver against it: a lighting plan, a shot list and an agreed standard for what gets delivered.

Because a full day can run on average between $10,000 and $25,000 — once talent, location, crew and post are accounted for — that expensive figure is exactly why the discipline to execute it, on time, against a brief, exists.

So by comparison, a generative AI platform costs much less than a traditional photography shoot. However, a cheaper cost to produce generative AI photography did not replace the need for a brief — it only removed the cost pressure that traditional photography introduced. Somehow, that’s the largest gap in today’s generative AI production. AI results do not always achieve photorealistic output without appearing overly fake, appearing over-smoothed and plastic looking.

Marketing Clients Are Hiring for the Skill, Not the Output

Listen to what a brand asks for when it brings in outside help on Generative AI work, because in our experience it's a skill that is still lacking in today’s industry. Marketers aren't looking for someone who simply writes good prompts. They're looking for someone who can take a real campaign brief — audience parameters, brand voice guidance, channel specs, creative direction — and produce generative photography that is on-brand, without the brand team having to review every single output.

They're also looking for someone who can look at an output and say precisely what's wrong with it, in brand terms. Things like:

  • the lighting feels too cold for a warm lifestyle brand
  • the talent model's posture communicates effort where the positioning sells ease
  • the background competes with the product instead of supporting it

And here's the insight: the deliverable isn't about the shot they liked best. It's the entire set of shots that best serve the brief. Those are different, and knowing which is which — then being able to explain them to the CMO — is what separates someone who uses prompts to produce generative outputs, versus the skills of an experienced generative photographer.

That's a professional skill, and it's learnable. It's also what separates the people building careers in Generative Photography from others producing work, and wondering why the brands they show their work to, never call back.
